Going Green: Full Circle Landscaping

St. Patrick's Day is coming up, which means we are thinking GREEN… but not in terms of beer, beads, and shamrocks. At Nurney Landscape and Design, we are committed to supporting sustainable practices,  thriving properties, and a healthier planet. For us, going green isn’t just a trend; it’s a responsibility, and we are passionate about incorporating eco-friendly solutions into every aspect of our work. Three key green areas for us are: composting, recycling, and energy efficiency. We implement these practices every day of the year, and encourage our clients to embrace them as well.

Composting: Nature’s Recycler

We believe in the power of composting. It’s a natural process that transforms organic waste into nutrient-rich “black gold” that enriches soil. At Nurney, we compost all plant material that comes back to our office property. The organic material from our large leaf cleanup at the end of the year doesn’t just disappear; it’s the foundation of our composting system. After piling the leaves, we diligently turn the pile throughout the winter to aerate it, and by spring, we have beautiful, rich compost ready to be mixed with topsoil. This compost then becomes an invaluable element of our client’s flowerbeds, creating full-circle sustainability.

This ‘full-circle’ approach extends beyond leaves. Even shrubs removed from properties find new purpose through composting. By returning these organic materials to the earth, we minimize waste, reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, and create healthier, more vibrant landscapes.

Recycling: Reducing Our Footprint

Recycling is another cornerstone of our green philosophy. We’re committed to recycling as much as possible, from paper seed packets to plastic plant containers to leftover materials from projects. It’s a small effort that makes a big difference in reducing our environmental footprint. We encourage our clients to utilize natural rainwater to feed plants and mulch with NutriPeat, a naturally recycled mulch.

Energy Efficiency: Illuminating the Path to Sustainability

Energy efficiency is crucial for reducing our impact on the environment. Beyond having a 100% electric fleet of equipment, we encourage and install energy-efficient lighting on our client's properties. While it might seem like a small detail, choosing energy-efficient lighting can lead to substantial savings and environmental benefits over time.

We understand that investing in landscape lighting upfront may seem expensive. However, these energy-efficient fixtures last significantly longer, requiring less frequent replacements and lowering long-term costs. Beyond financial benefits, this lighting reduces energy consumption, minimizing our carbon footprint. No matter what lighting you choose, it is sure to enhance the visibility of your property, deterring potential accidents and increasing security.

At Nurney Landscape and Design, we are dedicated to helping you create beautiful, sustainable landscapes. By embracing practices like composting, recycling, and energy efficiency, we can work together to create a greener future for our community and the planet.
