Why does a landscape matter to your property value?

Many property owners are told a “nice” landscape can enhance the value of their property. What does that really mean though? We’ve done the research, and we found that certain landscape designs can significantly increase the value of your home.

The results? “A home valued at $150,000 with no landscape (lawn only) could be worth $8,250 to $19,050 more with a sophisticated landscape with color and large plants.” Your landscape matters, and this survey proves that the design matters as well. A minimal landscape can actually decrease property value in some situations. We looked for additional sources of information, and found this article from Bob Villa “Landscaping: A Good Investment.” Some estimates state that a well designed, installed and maintained landscape can increase a home’s value by 20%, “a figure that rivals the return on a new kitchen or bath.” Farm Bureau Financial Services found that “mature trees can add an average of 10 percent to a property’s value.”

The key however is maintenance! Not only is important to have a total plan for your landscape with features that home buyers are looking for, but it is also important to have a well-maintained landscape which protects your installation investment and also enhances the value of your property.
